Enamelling is a captivating and time-honored artistic craft that infuses vibrancy & durability into metalwork through the application of finely powdered glass, known as enamel. It has a rich history dating back thousands of years & combines creativity with precision with knowledge and savoir-faire passed down from experienced artisans to young talents. This craft is a fusion of art & chemistry, where heat & finesse meld to create enduring & visually stunning pieces of jewellery, art, and functional objects. I got to explore different techniques and processes of enameling.
Prepping and Layering
Metal Base
For the base copper plate is used. Copper, Silver and Gold can be used as the metal base.

Prepping the base
The metal is cleaned thoroughly to remove any dirt, grease, or oxidation. It was cleaned through glass brush.

Gluing
A thin layer of wallpaper glue is put on the metal surface.

Powdered Enamel
Dry powdered enamel is made of tiny glass pieces that is used by sprinkling.

Powdered Enamel
A thin layer of powdered enamel is evenly spread to the surface through a whisk.

Trivet Placement
It is positioned on the trivet parallel to the ground to prevent the glass from flowing out.

Firing
It is then subjected to firing at temperatures ranging between 800 to 900 degrees Celsius to fuse the enamel with the metal.

Acid Bath
Then put into a solution and heated to remove the oxidized residue after firing.

Enamel Experimentation

Exploring various techniques using opaque and transparent enamel layers after the initial application involves a time consuming trial-and-error process. This experimentation and sampling process is extended due to its iterative nature.

Enameling paints, which would otherwise be considered toxic, are applied much like watercolors and undergo a slight darkening transformation during the firing process.

Colored powder enamel is applied using flower petals as stencils, then fired. Layers of different colors are added to create intricate designs.

To fill the liquid enamel, a copper wire outline is created. Achieving the perfect consistency and ensuring even application of the liquid enamel is essential.

The pattern on the surface is created with a metal rod while the liquid enamel is in its molten state.
